The Engineer covered Neara’s digital line rating study of energy networks across the UK and Ireland, which found that 74 per cent of networks are underutilised under existing Maximum Operating Temperatures. Even at 85°C, an estimated 64 per cent of lines would still be operating under capacity.
The study assessed potential clearance violations and physical bottlenecks affecting medium voltage spans, using LiDAR data alongside detailed engineering standards. The modelling shows how additional power could be added to the grid using existing distribution assets, helping ease the connections queue facing new energy projects.
